Bellingham Neighborhoods

Bellingham, Washington is a quaint city located in the Northwest corner of Washington State.  Bellingham has some very distinct areas and charming neighborhoods. The City of Bellingham consist of 23 unique neighborhoods each with it's very own neighborhood association.  In order to preserve the beauty of B-ham strict guidelines have been made in regarding building and development.  Due to these guidelines our city has beautiful parks in every neighborhood, a great transit system, and inner urban trail system for recreating.

Alabama Neighborhood sits atop a small Bellingham butte overlooking all of B-town.  Alabama Street is a major arterial that connects Bellingham to the Lake Whatcom area.  My favorite attribute of this neighborhood are the views and it's proximity to Whatcom Falls Park.  Some of the Alabama Hill homes are backed up to the park which offers solitude, recreation, and nature all within city limits.

The Birchwood Neighborhood is on the northwest end of B-ham.  It's dwellings consist of older homes on 20,000 + Sq. foot lots.  This area used to be made up of small farms on the outskirts of town.  Well, town has engulfed the this neighborhood, but you can still find a farm, here and there. For the most part it's made up of single family homes, with apartment complexes on some of the main.

Central Business District Neighborhood is a collection of smaller neighborhoods each with it's diverse characteristics.  The City and the Port have recently joined forces to create a redevelopment plan for 137 industrial waterfront acres acquired by the Port with homes, shops, offices and light industry, as well as parks, a healthy shoreline habitat along Bellingham Bay, and a new marina.

The Columbia Neighborhood is one of the citys oldest neighborhoods, comprise of nearly 4,000 Bellingham residents. The majority of the approximately 1,600 residential structures within this neighborhood are single family homes. The housing is attractive and well maintained, with narrow tree-lined streets and mature landscaping. The southernmost portion of the neighborhood, identified as the Eldridge Historical District, contains many large, historical homes.

Columbia Neighborhood residents enjoy the use of Elizabeth Park, which is viewed as a valued community asset. Other parks within the neighborhood include Carl Lobe and Lorraine Ellis Parks with facilities for younger children and families. Squalicum Creek Greenway forms the northwestern border of the neighborhood and there is easy access to Squalicum Creek Park, in the adjacent Birchwood Neighborhood.

Cornwall Park Neighborhood is nestled in the heart of Bellingham. Cornwall Park is best known for its namesake a large, 70 acres park that offers a wealth of recreation.  Equipped with playgrounds, baseball fields, spray water park, wooded trails, hills, horseshoe pits, tennis courts, picnic shelters, and a disc golf course.

Cornwall Neighborhood is home to around 2300 residence that enjoy the character and charm of the area due to it's older homes, large yards, and open spaces.  Cornwall park is also the home of one of B-town's largest employers which is St. John's Medical Center.

The Edgemoor Neighborhood
is located on a heavily wooded peninsula in the far southwestern corner of Bellingham.  This area is the creme de creme of B-ham. It boasts some of the largest, best-maintained homes and lots in the city.  The 2,000 + population consists mostly of retirees, second homes, and family homes on large, mature and well manicure landscapes.

Fairhaven Neighborhood was founded in the late 1880s and is now part of the City of Bellingham. Fairhaven Neighborhood is in the southern part of Bellingham consisting of single family homes, apartment complexes, and ocean view condo's and town houses.

Geneva Neighborhood Geneva is located east of the Whatcom Falls Neighborhood and along the southern shores of Lake Whatcom.  It's an upscale neighborhood with medium to higher priced homes on large lots, secluded lots. Geneva is located just outside Bellingham city limits with easy access to great mountain biking trails and water sports.

The Guide Meridian Stretches north and west of the Meridian neighborhood and is an area of major expansion. As Bellingham expands to the north and more large retail chains move in - such as Costco, Best Buy, and Wal-Mart - more and more apartment complexes, condominiums and housing developments have arisen. The area once boasted large family lots, especially along Bakerview Road, but since Bellis Fair Mall opened in 1988, the area has become more commercial, with multiple-family residences being the standard.

The Happy Valley Neighborhood is diverse with College students, couples, and new families.  Although over the years more apartment buildings have been added to the mix, you can still find quite areas.

The Lettered Streets is a diverse neighborhood that includes single family homes, small apartment buildings, offices in older homes, new buildings, small parks.  It has a lot of personality and character.  Although, at one time it was run down, most of the homes have been renovated and has made a come back as is a very popular B-town neighborhood.

Meridian Neighborhood - The Meridian neighborhood, clustered along Meridian Street north of Interstate 5, is the retail center of Bellingham. The neighborhood gained its independence from the Guide Meridian neighborhood in 1995 because of its heavily commercial nature and the fact that it sits at the intersection of the two largest traffic arteries in Bellingham: Interstate 5 and Meridian Street.

The Mount Baker Neighborhood is one of the fastest growing residential areas of Bellingham, offering sweeping views of the city and Bellingham Bay from atop Barkley Boulevard on the north side of town. This large neighborhood covers many commercial developments, including Sunset Square, Barkley Village, and the industrial areas along Hannegan Road, East Bakerview Road and Irongate Road. The area boasts two large grocery stores, several restaurants, a movie theatre, gas stations, banks and a department store, creating the feel of a second downtown.

Puget Neighborhood is conveniently located for all your family needs.  There is everything you made need in the nearby vicinity.  Sports complexes for the little ones, shopping, and transit.

The Roosevelt Neighborhood styles vary from 100-year old single family homes to modern apartment complexes.  Over 6,000 residents make Roosevelt the most populated neighborhood in the city.  It consist of a light Industrial dealerships and warehouse to offices in older homes.  Roosevelt Park is a neighborhood activity center adjacent to the Boys and Girls Club and includes a playground, picnic area, basketball court and loop trail.

The Samish Neighborhood has some great new and older homes.  Most have spectacular views of Bellingham and the bay.  Some even back up to the forest, so you have the best of both worlds.  Lake Padden is a nearby park that has a dog park, fishing pond, and walking trail.

In the Sehome Neighborhood most residential areas have mature landscaping and there are several tree-lined arterials, which are highly valued by the residents. Being one of the City's older and more centrally located residential neighborhoods, approximately 90 percent of the neighborhood is developed, and the population density is among the highest of the city's neighborhoods. Over 3,500 people reside in the neighborhood in a mix of single and multi-family structures.  Most structures have illegal ADU's that have been grandfathered in over the years.

The Silver Beach Neighborhood makes up the entire western end of Lake Whatcom and was platted into small lots and developed many years ago.  As a result of this pattern, there is a wide variety of ages and styles of housing in the neighborhood.  The majority of the housing is in good shape and the fact that people take pride in the area is reflected by the well-landscaped lots and well-maintained homes throughout the neighborhood. The neighborhood has miles of shoreline along Lake Whatcom, which provides beautiful views, tremendous recreational opportunities, and a unique setting.

South Neighborhood is located west of Interstate 5 at the southern edge of the city, the South Neighborhood is home to over 1,500 Bellingham residents. The large areas of undeveloped property and significant natural features help define the character of the neighborhood.

Chuckanut Village perhaps epitomizes the historical character of the area with the image of a small, secluded Puget Sound fishing village. Fairhaven Park and Rose Garden is a city park within the South Neighborhood which is highly valued by the residents of this and adjacent neighborhoods, as well as by citizens throughout Bellingham.  Located on Padden Creek, this 17-acre area is part of the city's heritage of community parks.

South Hill Neighborhood is located between Bellingham and Fairhaven.  It's a hill side neighborhood that has majestic bay views of the San Juan islands.  Everything you could possibly want is within walking distance...great dining, shopping, waterfront coffee shops.

The Sunnyland Neighborhood is as diverse as any Bellingham neighborhood. Industrial uses (some located in older homes) dominate the southern third of the neighborhood. Multi-family and single family areas surround a neighborhood commercial area at the Alabama/James Street intersection. This neighborhood is home to over 2,200 Bellingham residents with the residential character generally one of single family two-story older homes.

The Western Washington University Neighborhood contains open space, which is easily accessible to students, staff and visitors.  Sehome Hill Arboretum provides areas for academic study, trails for recreation and commuting, and a major green/open space which serves the broader community. Active recreational and educational open spaces include numerous sports playfields, experimental gardens and environmental study areas.  Neighborhood houses in this area are mostly college rentals within walking distance of the school.

Whatcom Falls Neighborhood gets it's name from the park in it's neighborhood.  A large part of this neighborhood includes the Whatcom Falls Park.  It's a favorite of mine due to the fact that all the homes are located in the heavily treed park.  Whatcom Falls Park has a system of trails, water falls, and recreation that compares to no other neighborhood.  If that's not enough Galbraith mountain is across the street for mountain biking and hiking.

The York Neighborhood is located west of Interstate 5 and east of Bellingham's City Center. It is one of the City's oldest neighborhoods, with many large, well-built homes on sandstone foundations.  The majority of the houses are small, and are built on smaller lots of about 4,480 square feet.  This creates a rather high population density and lack of open spaces. Somehow the York neighborhood has kept it's family oriented personality, despite it's zoning for commercial and multi family units.

The York Neighborhood Association has worked with the city to establish and develop Rock Hill Park at the end of Iron Street.  A small playground and half court basketball provide activity for children.  Neighbors have adopted the park and help maintain the flower beds.
